Our Values

Our Values

Decadent Theatre Company have a very different company philosophy compared to the older theatre companies; we put pride in our difference and in the way it expresses itself on stage, on tour and in the rehearsal room.

1. Touring Theatre

Decadent Theatre Company specializes in large-scale theatre tours. Through our tours, we strive to emphasize the best features of Ireland's modern dramatic tradition for audiences of all sizes. As commerce and art becomes increasingly indistinguishable in the 21st century, it is clear that theatre can be geared towards an urban, monied elite - sometimes great shows never breach a city's limit. Decadent Theatre Company attempts to turn this tide - we provide brilliant theatre not only for urban hubs but also for the men and women of Irish small towns through our tours.

2. Edgy Theatre

Our work certainly has an edge - we try to produce plays that haven't seen the light in the Irish theatre scene. The theatre that Decadent Theatre Company commissions aims to be interesting and new to all audiences around Ireland. Our recent productions of A Skull in Connemara by Martin McDonagh in 2013/14 and Defender of the Faith by Stuart Carolan in 2014 are perfect examples of how we select plays that simply have not been given due attention on stage. The Pillowman in 2015 will follow in this vein too.

3. Young Theatre

Decadent Theatre Company aims to provide art and opportunity to Ireland's youth. Plays should not always focus on the older generations, instead they should appeal to all demographics, Decadent Theatre Company believes. Also, through internships and work placements, Decadent provides talented youths with the opportunity to be around some of Ireland's most best actors and creative team members.

4. Accessible Theatre

We feel that some plays are complicated, overdone and do not always connect with Ireland's varied population. As a consequence, the plays that Decadent Theatre Company produce are not elitist but are instead made for the common man in every respect. High-brow tactics by those in theatre circles has left the theatre world nowhere as theatre should be understood and appreciated by all. As Hamlet said:

"For anything so overdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end, both at the first and now, was and is to hold, as ’twere, the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure."

5. Creative Theatre

Every show by Decadent Theatre Company is backed up by a compelling creative team. Every inch of the stage is thought out by our team and together they transport the audience in the world of the play, and all its little intricacies. This ability has not gone unnoticed - all of our team have either won or have been nominated for an Irish Times Theatre Award.
