Decadent Theatre Company specialises in large scale theatre tours. It’s in our DNA to tour and we are as likely to be found in a Midlands town as in The Gaiety, Dublin or The Lyric, Belfast. Through our National Tours we present Ireland’s modern dramatic voice to audiences of all types. In 2014 we were nominated for the Irish Times Theatre Award’s Judges’ Special Award for our “enduring commitment to touring”. We take pride in our difference to other Theatre Companies and how it expresses itself on stage, on tour and in the rehearsal room.
Since 2000, Decadent has produced over 30 National Tours. Most recently: From A Low and Quiet Sea (2022/23), The Chief, Blackbird (2022/09) Eden (2021/19), There are Little Kingdoms (2021), A Love Like That , Pumpgirl (2019), A Skull in Connemara (2018/14), Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, The Mai (2018), The Weir (2017), The Pillowman (2016).
Our work certainly has an edge. We produce plays that don’t often see the light in the Irish theatre scene. We commission scripts that appeal to audiences throughout Ireland. Recent productions of the Irish Premiere of The Pillowman (Martin McDonagh) and World Premieres of The Thing About December (Donal Ryan) and A Love Like That (Billy Roche) are good examples of how we select plays and playwrights that have not been given due attention on stage. Our revival of The Mai (Martina Carr) in 2020 follows in this vein.
Decadent Theatre works to provide theatrical stimulus and opportunity to Ireland’s young people. Theatre should appeal to all demographics. Through internships and work placements, Decadent provides talented young people with thec hance to work with some of Ireland’s best actors and creative theatre practitioners.
Theatre can be over-complicated, overdone and not always connect with a wide audience. In contrast, the plays that Decadent Theatre produce are not elitist but for the common person in every respect. Theatre should be understood and appreciated by all.
Decadent Theatre is backed up by a passionate and professional creative team. Every area of a production is thought out carefully. Together they help transport the audience into the world of the play, in all its details. This ability has not gone unnoticed. All of our team have either won or have been nominated for an Irish Times Theatre Award.
